A man who believed in excellence of work and innovation, Ben Cohn Hampton was born in Albany, GA April 2, 1927 to the late Reverend Eugene and Morilla Daniel Hampton. He was the oldest of two brothers, Joseph and James Hampton. He attended the Dougherty County Public Schools obtaining his Diploma from Madison High School at the age of 16 in 1943. Hampton enrolled as a freshmen in 1943 when Georgia Normal became a 4-year degree granting institution called Albany State College. When Albany State College's Founder, Dr. Joseph W. Holley wrote "You Can't Build a Chimney from the Top", Ben transcribed the initial draft as a student. He went on to earn a Certificate in Commercial Education in 1945. His education was interrupted by the U.S. Army Air Force draft. After his tour of duty in 1946, he returned to Albany State College to continue his education. In 1949, he received a B.S. Degree in Secretarial Science with the second highest academic average in his class. After graduation, Hampton was employed by the College. Except for a 16 month stint in the U.S. Army Air Force, Hampton spent 36 consecutive years at Albany State College. He spent 18 years working in the Registrar's Office and one year as Director of Public Relations. He also worked in the President's Office, Business Office and Admissions and Records. he was the first Director of Alumni Affairs. He retired in 1985 as Director of Sponsored Programs in the Office of Institutional Advancement.
